Mystery Plant

I came home the other week to find this nice plant sitting on our coffee table with a very sweet note attached. It was from David (of course). I liked the thought that went into it and it looked really neat, too. But it hasn't stopped at looking cool...

This is how it looks during the day:

And this is how it looks at nighttime:

The first time I saw it closed, I thought, Great, I can't even make it through an entire week without killing vegetation. I was both relieved and surprised to see it back to normal the following morning. I'm not exactly sure how it knows it's getting to be nighttime because we have the lights on to make it as bright, if not brighter, as the daytime. But it's a smart little bugger. Even now as I'm typing the petals are half-way closed. D said he took out the tab with the description on it, so I have no idea what it's called or where it comes from. Maybe I'll just make up my own name for it...like really-smart-plant-that-knows-how-to-open-and-close-on-its-own.

That's a really scientific name you've got there, Jess...

I've never seen anything like that, so I can't help you. I'm also pretty good at killing plants--which is why I never buy any.

You know what else I think is cool? Those Easter lilies that open on Easter Sunday... how do they know?

Josh was looking around online to find a picture of it so he could figure out what it is, but he had no luck :)

I asked Mrs. Smith to have a look. She's quite the gardener! When she gets back to me hopefully I'll have a name for your plant! We'll see...

Of course the plane would have to be smart, it was bought by David and belongs to you! Love Mom F

Mrs. Smith thinks it's an Oxalis plant otherwise known as wood sorrel or garden sorrel. I looked up the definition and it says a clover-like plant. Hope that helps!
